Nairobi is set to become the epicenter of global energy discourse this week as the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), on behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, hosts the International Conference on Nuclear Energy (ICoNE). From March 24th to 26th, 2026, the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) will welcome leaders and experts to chart a path toward a sustainable energy future for the continent.

A Collaborative Vision for Energy Security

The conference is a high-level collaboration involving key national and international stakeholders:

  • Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).
  • The United States Department of Energy via the FIRST Program.
  • Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).
  • The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).

ICoNE 2026 brings together African governments, technical experts, regulatory authorities, and global organizations to explore how nuclear energy can strengthen energy security and drive sustainable development across Africa.

Why Nuclear Energy?

As African nations face increasing electricity demand and the urgent need for low-carbon solutions, nuclear power offers a reliable path to meeting climate goals. The conference will serve as a platform for dialogue on:

  • Climate Resilience: Assessing the role of nuclear in a clean energy transition.
  • Emerging Technologies: Examining Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and their potential for the African grid.
  • Policy & Finance: Exchanging insights on regulatory frameworks and effective financing models.

Showcasing Innovation

Beyond the discussions, a series of exhibitions will run alongside the conference. Featuring organizations from the energy, finance, and transport sectors, these displays will showcase innovative products and services essential for nuclear energy development.

Kenya’s Regional Leadership

This landmark event underscores Kenya’s commitment to diversifying its national energy mix and positioning itself as a regional leader in the sector. By fostering strategic partnerships, Kenya aims to support Africa’s broader transition to reliable and clean energy systems.
